Together: creating safe spaces of connection and hope.
Many of our supporters gathered recently for a really enjoyable evening in the function centre behind St Mary’s Church in North Sydney.
The primary purpose of the evening – in addition to providing an opportunity for genuine connection – was to acknowledge our supporters as invaluable members of our community and as critical contributors to our mission. In particular, we wanted to recognise the very deliberate choice each person makes in their lives: to stand in solidarity with those in our community who are alienated and excluded, who are powerless and poor – and to do so in their presence, face to face, offering kindness and compassion, and creating the opportunity for hope.
It was terrific to be able to welcome Sr Anne – one of our Founders – who happened to be in Sydney and was able to attend. That was a real treat for our supporters, all of whom either know her or know of her, to have Anne share a few thoughts with them.
We also shared news of a very recent change in the leadership of Cana’s Board. Carmel Shaw is now the Chair, replacing Ian Dardis, who has resigned from both the Chair role and his position as a Director. We took the opportunity to thank Ian for his invaluable contribution. He was also generous enough to share a few words with those gathered. Ian isn’t leaving us – he plans to stay regularly involved in some hands-on work at the new farm.
It was delightful to have a team of men from The Cardoner Project with us, volunteering as wait staff. They were outstanding – as were the chefs from Plate It Forward, who prepared such tasty food for everyone to enjoy. If you are in need of catering, we couldn’t recommend them more highly.
Together, through maintaining these connections, we can continue to build safe spaces and a community of compassion and belonging.
