Crystal spent eight months sleeping rough, with nowhere to bring her daughter.
She found St Francis House in Redfern, Cana's overnight shelter. Over a hot meal in the kitchen, she told us her story. Years of addiction. Homelessness. A system that hadn't caught her when it should have.
She wanted her two-year old daughter back.
Crystal was determined to get clean, so she moved to Nagle House, our home for longer stays. She worked hard, and she got there. But the courts wouldn't grant her custody without a permanent home, and public housing told her she'd need to wait another decade.
So Cana stepped in where the system couldn't. We offered her a permanent place at Nano's House, a home she could actually bring her daughter to.
The Court approved the arrangement. Her daughter moved in. They're happy and healthy, and Cana is now working with Housing NSW to find them a permanent home closer to family.
The story isn't finished. But it's heading somewhere good.
Crystal, and her daughter, finally have a chance to begin again.
Cana receives no government funding. That means no twelve-week deadline on healing. People get the time they need, however long that takes, to heal and rebuild.
