Cana Farm at Orchard Hills in western Sydney provides opportunities for marginalised people to mix with the wider community and gain valuable training and work experience. More importantly, it gives people a sense of belonging and community.
Partnering with Western Sydney TAFE
Cana Farm offers training in hospitality, horticulture, carpentry and other trades by partnering with Western Sydney TAFE. TAFE students at Cana Farm have very diverse backgrounds - from refugees to former inmates. There are currently 160 students enrolled in Cana Farm courses.
Retreats and Respite
Cana Farm also hosts people from other Cana shelters and people of diverse backgrounds for daytime respite and the occasional short camping holiday. It's a place to relax, learn, participate and feel at home.
I have the privilege of attending a few classes/workshops at Cana Community Farm. Cana, or The Farm, as it is affectionately known, is located in Orchard Hills with a lovely outlook that gives the feel of whoever goes there that they are at one with the land. It is a not-for-profit organisation run by volunteers and donations. It is a place where people can go that gives them hope and companionship. Here at the Farm, stress and anxiety are alleviated by being in an environment where you are helped to nurture your talents whether big or small by interacting with members who have either retired or trying other skills that they have not tried before. I love it! - Sharyn
